ERP Assignment "The Hanging"

Question chosen: a) Recall a time you witnessed someone being punished and the circumstances of the offence. How did the incident affect you and your understanding of the purpose of punishment?

The school hall was lacking its normally hustle and bustle with students chatting actively and engaging in their own private discussion most probably about the topic or content of the assembly.To me it was rather unusual and rather unnatural that the whole school was drenched in such an suppressing atmosphere.
This morning during the flag-raising ceremony, our discipline master went onto the stage clouded in an air of solemnity and as he cleared his throat on the microphone with a clear "Hmph", it caught our attention and effectively silenced the whole school. "Today the assembly period will be held in the school hall so please proceed to the school hall immediately after the last period before assembly. However may I warn you guys that the presence of any electronic devices that is capable of recording videos and capturing photographs are strictly prohibited and will be confiscated by the prefects if you are spotted with one in your hands. I hope you will all understand. And thats all for morning announcements today, parade commander please proceed." Though it seems to be just like any normal announcement about the school assembly's program, however it was evident that the discipline master certainly had an unusually harsh and gruff tone when reading the announcement and there was something strange about the part about the restriction of electronic devices that can record video or take picture. To confirm my suspicion with the others, I elbowed my friend Albert and asked, "Hey Albert, don't you think that the assembly period today is something going to be something special?" However, I was pretty much bewildered by his reaction but more specifically the look on his face. He was pale-white with a look of absolute shock on his face and not to mention his hands trembling really badly. He was terrified. As I enquired about him, he abruptly jumped up and flashed a twitching smile proclaiming that he was alright. Yet I knew there was something amiss.
During recess it seemed to me that he was avoiding deliberately by not showing up at the usual bench we had our meals together. I was deeply puzzled and at the same time perturbed by his exceptional behaviour. What deepen my worries for him was when he was taken out the class personally by the discipline master just 20 minutes before the last period ended. Till then I have not even spotted a glimpse of his presence, anywhere in the hall.
The air of suspension hung over me in an attempt to suffocate me. The mystery of the assembly program, Albert's sudden disappearance and his eccentric behaviour today was too much for me to absorb all at once, it was really unbearable.
Finally the discipline master appeared on the stage. To my utmost shock and astonishment, the scene before my eye was transmitted as an image that appeared in my brain. Albert was standing right beside the discipline with his head hanging sheepishly, fixed at his position. From then every word that came from the discipline master's mouth shuddered me. "This boy from Class 3A was caught red-handed in the midst of committing an act of theft in another class. Not only that, he was also discovered to have played truancy on several other occasions. As you all know, stealing and truancy are both major offence and any student foolish enough to step in the boundaries of such serious offence would be dealt with harshly. Therefore he will be treated to 4 strokes of the cane. I hope all of you would learn from this incident and hope that there would not be a second offender, and at the same time, Albert I hope you understand the severity of your actions and hope that though this punishment you can stand up from where you fell and start over a new leaf." I could observe the remorse in his eyes as tears are rolling down the side of his cheeks.
The caning began. To me it seems that every stroke was more of a torture to me rather than to Albert. Every time the cane came into contact with Albert, the loud snap would bring shiver and a shudder ran through my spine. It was too much for me to see my best friend getting caned on stage and I could not do a thing to help him escape such a cruel punishment. I could feel his pain from his face twisting in agony as each strokes went down with a hard and crisp imapct on his flesh. It almost seem to be eternal as the caning was finally over. Alberts was panting hard, his face that of a deathly pale and sweat all over his face, dripping down from his chin.
Yes that was a scene of punishment that always remained in my memories even till now. Albert and I are still good friend and he has since chaned a lot, being much quiet and unspoken and most important complete adherence to laws and rules regardless of the where he is. I have always thought punishment is only something you suffer for temporarily for something bad you have done. But now I understand, punishment is not only for a short period of time. It can be very psychological and long-term indeed as it accompanies a person no matter where he is or how he have changed. Yet maybe, it is really the reason why people often change for the better. It is not the pain and suffering we get out of the punishment, but really, it is the valuable lessons that we can get to learn and reflect upon our mistakes and actions.

Should streaking be allowed? (New and Improved Introduction)

Would you try to imagine if you walk into a lecture theatre and find a group of classmates from your level, some whom you might even happen to know, stripped naked in front of the stage dancing and partying wildly.Well my first reaction would be that of bewilderment before i go crazy and runs away from the lecture theatre. That is what I supposed to be the first reaction of anyone who first encounters streaking. Streaking is the defined as the action of taking off clothes and running around naked in the public and it is exceptionally common in campus and universities in America throughout as it is a form of celebration for these students usually during graduation in which they like express themselves "openly". Yet this action has brought about many controversial issues in the communities and society such as area residents near schools being harassed by those students in the act of streaking or even members of the public. Streaking is a highly controversial issue as itis considered to be a personal decision to express one's freedom instead of being a form of sexual intimidation to offend people. Instead of banning this form of ongoing western culture in many university i feel that controlling it to certain extent would be a good idea.

Instead of banning this form of ongoing western culture in many university i feel that controlling it to certain extent would be a good idea.
The act of streaking is very much bounded to the western culture as it would very much be considered a form taboo in our Asian context. The act running around naked especially in front of those who are of the opposite sex is definitely unacceptable in the Asian society. Firstly there is part of the culture which deems the act being naked in public as unforgivable and punishable by law because it is considered evidently as an act of sexual offense by our society. So in the context of Asian universities even if students are very willing to commit streaking, the society is certainly unable to accept this action of streaking. Therefore it forms a impenetrable wall between streaking and the Asian culture, thus it means that accepting is not really based on personal freedom in this context more sided towards the longstanding culture and rule that is melded into the society.
However I still feel that the action of streaking should not be banned but rather restricted to a certain extent of which it is deemed acceptable. To start with, the act of streaking can be considered by the students as a form of action to release them from their confinement to certain rule to enjoy their own freedom. Moreover it is not something that the students commit relatively frequently or else that would deemed as a form of sexual harassment and intimidation beacause it is done out of daily basis then. Having fun ocassionaly is considered to be acceptable, as it would be relatively the same to us celebrating our birthday or something similiar. However the thing to control is not the action of commiting streaking but more of the extent of commiting the action.I feel that students should not go overboard in expressing their own freedom and to have fun as to many other people who do not have a clear perspective of what is going on it is easy for them to misunderstand the purpose behind the action of streaking and would deinitely associate it with sexual intimidation even if the student those not meant for it to be in that way. Thus i would like to say that the essential point lies in the control of the the action to a certain extent.
So to end it off, I would like to say that streaking is something that is based on the freedom and choice of the students. To ban the act would too harsh so controlling to a certain extent would be a much better option.

Should the CCTs be scraped?

Although to me CCTs have always been tiring, and very much troublesome, as the process of studying and mugging for the preparation of these long CCTs. However in my opinion, i feel that CCTs should not be scraped. Firstly CCTs are there for some reason, because they are not only created for the benefit of the teachers to torture the students for fun. I feel that the existenece of the CCTs is there as a indicator for how much stuff we have learnt up to a point of time and from these we can understand where we actually stand in terms of our learning in the class. It can help us in our process of learning for once we have a gauge of our standard and then we can carry out our studies more accurately and effectively. Therefore the CCTs actually paves a road for us to travel to help excel and thus i feel that it shouuld not be scraped.

What is an exposition?

By definition from Wikipedia, exposition is one of the four rhetoric modes of discourse, along with argumentation, description and narration.Well the purpose of exposition is to inform, explain, analyze, or define.
Well my image of exposition is said to be murky in my memory for if I did remember clearly, I had done expository writing during Secondary 1 for a short story called 'The Scarlet Ibis' and it is written for an In-Class Assignment.
At that time, it was somehow my first contact with expository writing and from my understanding, expository writing is to write out your own stand about a certain issue and suuport your own stand with support from evidences that we obtain from sources that are authorised in the field we are discussing. Expository writing provides one with a platform to express one's thoughts about certain matters and this evaluate one's understanding of the depth of the matter to find out what is behind the scene rather what is superficial and easy to identify just at the glance at it. Well this supposedly what I come to understand of exposition from what I learnt in my experience from writing the one and only expository essay in Secondary 1.
